The Balm Balm Beach Long-Wearing Blush Review & Swatches

The Balm Balm Beach Long-Wearing Blush ($21 at TheBalm.com) is brand new this summer and is the perfect warm-neutral pink for a barely-there kiss of color.  I'm obsessed with all of The Balm's blushes (see my reviews here, here, and here so I knew I had to get this one to add to my collection.

The packaging is gorgeous, which isn't surprising since The Balm always does a great job with that. It has a retro beach scene on the outside and the blush pan looks as though it's surrounded by water. The compact is cardboard with a mirror inside and a magnetic closure. It also has an outer sleeve that matches the compact for mess-free traveling.

This formula claims to be long-wearing and I would certainly agree with that. The blush is soft, silky, and blends beautifully. Unfortunately, it's a very light pinky nude shade so I feel like only those with lighter skin tones will be able to wear this. It takes a bit of buildup just to get it to show up on my skin and I'm pretty fair! I normally swirl my brush into the pan, apply it, and then go back in at least one or two more times. Still, for me it's worth it because the color is stunning and the perfect everyday shade. It's also great when paired with a smoky eye because you can't overdo it.

On The Balm's website, they show this shade on a model with more of a medium skintone, but based on my experience I feel like she must have applied a ton of it to get it to show up that much. I thought maybe I was using the wrong kind of brush so I grabbed one with stiffer bristles and while it did apply it a little stronger, it still looked very subtle on me.

I've been getting a few questions from readers wondering how this compares to some of The Balm's lighter blushes like Down Boy and Frat Boy, as well as the Balm Desert Bronzer Blush so I decided to swatch them side-by-side.

You can see that Balm Beach is lighter than all the other shades and is more of a nude color. Frat Boy is more peachy-pink, Balm Desert is more bronze, and Down Boy is a cooler-toned Barbie Pink. 

Here it is on my skin...I absolutely love the color because it's a perfect, everyday shade for me. But I'm afraid that anyone with a darker skin tone than mine might be disappointed in how light is is. 

Overall, I've been using this blush every day and even brought it on vacation with me. The color is the perfect nude pink and it's definitely long-lasting. What's your favorite everyday blush shade? I'd love to hear about it!

The Balm Blush Swatches | 50% Off Today Only

A few months ago, The Balm was on HauteLook and I picked up a bunch of their blushes for 50% off. I've had a bunch of requests to post swatches side-by-side so you can see how the shades compare and I thought that today would be a great day to post them since The Balm is having their 50% off Flash Sale today between 10am-2pm PST (1pm-5pm for those on the East Coast).

I've developed a bit of an obsession with these blushes and they are so underrated, it surprises me that more people don't talk about them. They're so pigmented, soft, and easy to blend!

Instain ($22) is one of my holy grail blushes because it's so ridiculously long lasting for a powder blush. It comes in six shades, and so far I only own one, Argyle (petal pink). I definitely want to grab a few more during the sale today...$11 is a great deal for the quality you're getting (and almost drugstore price at that point!).

Down Boy ($21) is a cool-toned baby pink with a satin finish and no detectable shimmer.

Frat Boy ($21) is a warm-toned matte pinky peach that would look great on so many different skin tones.

Hot Mama ($20) is a pinky peach shimmer that gives your cheeks a soft, pretty glow.

Cabana Boy ($21) is a dusty rose blush with plum undertones and a subtle shimmer.

Balm Desert ($21) is a staining bronzer and blush in one that's super long-wearing. I love the rosy undertone it has and it works great as an every day blush.

Review:

I recently reviewed The Balm Meet Matt(e) Nude and was so impressed by it, I knew I needed to buy the newest palette in the series, Meet Matt(e) Trimony. At $42, it's not an inexpensive purchase (even though it's well worth it) so I was waiting until I had some Kohl's Cash/Yes2You rewards to put toward it. I finally got my hands on it a few weeks ago and let me tell you, I'm so happy I did!

As I get older, matte eyeshadows are totally my jam because they tend to look smoother on my eyelids and don't draw attention to any uneven texture. I have several matte palettes now but none of them compare to The Balm's formula. It's triple milled, feels like velvet and goes on so smooth, not to mention the pigmentation is just incredible, even without primer.

You also get a great value for your money because the pans are huge and last a ridiculously long time. The packaging is adorable too! Like the last Meet Matt(e) version, this comes in a cardboard palette with a magnetic closure and a huge mirror. It also has an outer sleeve that matches the design of the palette, making it easy to identify in a drawer and really secure for travel.

The shades in this palette seem to be everything Meet Matt(e) Nude was missing. Although I love Meet Matt(e) Nude, I could never use it alone for a complete eye look. It has a bright white shade but no beige-y highlight for all over the lid, and this one does. Matt(e) Nude didn't have a black shade either, while Matt(e) Trimony does. I find that I can use this palette by itself, while Matt(e) Nude ends up being a palette that I go to for one or two shades at a time.

They both have a pretty even mix of warm and cool shades, but Matt(e) Nude leans slightly cooler, while Matt(e) Trimony leans slightly warmer by one or two shades. Overall, this palette is very wearable with mostly nude shades and a few bolder colors thrown in. After using this for a while, I've discovered that even the beautiful cranberry shade in the center, Matt Kumar, is more wearable than I thought it would be, and I find myself reaching for it pretty often.

I swatched this palette with no primer in this photo, so you can see that they're crazy-pigmented and you don't need a primer to make these show up. However, because they're not a creamy, buttery formula (they're a little more dry/powdery), I recommend using a primer for all-day wear. They have decent lasting power, especially the darker shades, but I get a better wear time when I use a primer underneath. 

Overall, if you're a matte eyeshadow fan, this is a must-buy! Not only is the formula spectacular, the shade selection is really versatile and will work well for just about everybody.

The Balm Balm Desert Bronzer Blush Review

I recently picked up The Balm's Balm Desert Bronzer/Blush ($21) while perusing the beauty section at Kohls. It looked pretty dark in the pan, but once I swatched it, I realized I had to have it! It's a beautiful rosy brown shade that's really hard to find in a sea of warm orange-based bronzers.

I have pink-toned Irish skin that burns first and tans later, so my natural tan always looks a bit rosy underneath...I call it my "burn-tan". This powder delivers that exact shade.

As always, The Balm's packaging never disappoints. It's adorable, retro, and totally portable with a strong magnetic closure and soft cardboard packaging.

Like all of The Balm's powders, this is soft, silky and oh so blendable...it's just effortless to use. It looks dark in the pan but this doesn't go on strong right away...you can easily go sheer (perfect if you're light skinned like me) or you can build it for a stronger color.

The Balm markets this as a bronzer/blush and until I tried it, I wasn't sure I would like it as a blush...I usually go for lighter pinks and peaches. As it turns out, that's my favorite way to use it! Once you start applying it to your cheeks and it starts to sheer it out, that beautiful rosy tone comes through and it actually looks more blush than bronzer.

I almost forgot to mention, you can use this as an eyeshadow too, and it's great when you want to coordinate your eye and cheek colors. I like to use this as an all over lid shade and then I take some Mary Lou Manizer, dab a little in the center of my lid and in the inner corners...and viola! An easy, effortless summery look.

Balm Desert has a satin finish with just a hint of sheen to it, but I promise it's not shimmery or glittery. It's a very natural luminosity that just brings the tiniest bit of light to your face and just keeps it from looking flat or muddy. My swatch below was applied pretty heavily because I wanted you to really be able to see the color...just know that it goes on much more sheer when you're using a brush!

 It also has a tendency to create a bit of fallout because the powder is so soft and fluffy...just make sure to tap your brush before applying or you might get too much on your skin all at once.

Right now, I've been using this exclusively as a blush, but as we head into summer, I'll also be using it as a bronzer on key areas of my face to re-create my "burn-tan".

I just love the rosy bronze shade on my cheeks...it's a perfect everyday color that goes with just about any look. I've worn it every day for the last few weeks...sometimes I use it alone and other times, I start it a little bit lower just underneath my cheekbone and finish with a lighter peach or pink blush just above it as a topper. In this photo, I'm wearing Balm Desert by itself.

Overall, I'm so happy I picked this one up! It was kind of a spur of the moment thing but it's become a favorite already due to its versatility. The fact that you can use it as a bronzer, blush, and eyeshadow means that I'll be using this a lot this summer. Plus, the formula is perfection. I highly recommend this one and it's totally worth splurging on!

The Balm Meet Matt(e) Nude Review & Swatches

The Balm Meet Matt(e) Nude ($42 at Kohls) isn't a new palette but I picked it up during a recent The Balm sale on HauteLook and I've had quite a few requests for a review and swatches. I think a lot of you are wondering if it's worth the $42 price tag and I can already tell you that although I'm happy I was able to get it for $21, I would definitely pay full price for this one (and I don't say that too often). Let's take a look!

Quick Verdict: Yes, yes, YES! You need this one.

First of all, the packaging is so adorable, just like all The Balm products. It's quite large and it has a nice big mirror. The soft cardboard palette has a magnetic closure and I feel like it is very well cushioned to protect against the shadows breaking if this gets dropped. It also has a nice slim profile, so it's not a heavy, clunky palette to store. 

All nine shades are matte, which is one of the reasons I purchased this palette. As I get older, I tend to gravitate toward more matte shadows and the only all-matte palette I have is the original Tarte Tartelette palette. So I was definitely looking to add more shades to my collection, especially since I don't buy single eyeshadows very often. 

This palette has a beautiful range of shades, both warm and cool, including a pure white shade which is hard to find in most palettes. Usually you get a cream or a pale pink as the lightest shade, so having a pure white shade is a welcome addition to my collection. 

I'm so glad that each shade stands on it's own, there aren't any in this palette that are too close to each other. There are three gray shades...Matt Johnson is a deep charcoal, Matt Abdul is a pretty medium gray and Matt Hung is a grayish purple shade. There are also three brown shades...Matt Garcia is a warm deep brown while Matt Rosen is a warm medium brown. Matt Wood is a really deep, rich brown that would work great as a liner. But the nice thing is, all three browns and all three grays are very different from each other. 

The last three shades are very different from each other... Matt Malloy is a pure creamy white, Matt Singh is a pretty peach shade, and Matte Lombardi is a buttery tan-yellow. 

The formula of these shadows is beautiful. They're so smooth and silky with very little fallout. They feel almost creamy which is rare for matte eyeshadows...most of the time mattes are dry, powdery, and brush off of the skin easily without a primer. These really cling to the skin and have great staying power.  The pigmentation is just insane...look at that white shade! When I swatch eyeshadows, the really light cream or pink shades usually don't show up very well on my light skin, but this one really pops. These are swatched on bare skin, no primer and they're one swipe after swirling my finger around in the pan a few times.  They also go on very true to the color in the pan, which is just so amazing.

Overall, I can't recommend this palette enough and give it two thumbs way up! These are some of the best matte eyeshadows I've had the pleasure of trying. If you're willing to wait for another HauteLook sale, they usually come around once every few months, so there will likely be another one in the late Spring/Early Summer. Or, if you can't wait and want it now, don't feel too guilty about the $42 price tag...this is an extremely high quality palette. Plus, if you're buying it at Kohls, you can use your Kohls Cash and Yes2You rewards on this to save a little bit off the price.

The Balm Cosmetics The Manizer Sisters Palette Review & Swatches

When I first heard that The Balm was releasing a palette of their "Manizer" luminizers at Kohls a few weeks ago, I couldn't have been more excited! Mary-Lou Manizer is my favorite highlighter of all time and I use Cindy-Lou often as an illuminating blush. I also use both of them as eyeshadows from time to time...I love to use them by themselves with a little black liquid liner and mascara for a simple, everyday look. I haven't gotten around to purchasing Betty-Lou, mainly because it's too dark for me to use as a highlighter and too shimmery to wear all over as a bronzer. But I'm so glad I have it now because it'll make a great eyeshadow as well! I know a lot of you guys were wondering about the size of this new palette, so I just wanted to do a quick overview and comparison so you can see how it compares to the originals. Let's take a look! 

The Manizer Sisters- $28 at Kohls.com

The Balm The Manizer Sisters is Now Available at Kohls!

The Balm has just released a brand new palette called The Manizer Sisters ($28) featuring all three of their cult classic luminizers- Mary-Lou Manizer, Cindy-Lou Manizer, and Betty-Lou Manizer! I shared a sneak peek of this palette on my Instagram page last week but had no idea it would be available for sale so soon! 

Mary-Lou Manizer is arguably my favorite powder highlighter ever, so I'm freaking out right now over this palette. Not only are these highlighters, but they can also be used as shadows or dusted lightly all over the face for a gorgeous glow. I own the full sized Mary-Lou and Cindy-Lou but to have them in a travel-friendly palette would be amazing, plus I'll get to try Betty-Lou, which I haven't gotten the chance to buy yet.

Will you be picking up The Manizer Sisters? Right now it seems to be available only at Kohls.com (I did a store pickup search and didn't come up with any that have this in stock right now). I will definitely be purchasing today before these completely sell out! Look for a review very soon...

The Balm Mr. Write (Now) Review- Brian, Jac, and Vince

The Balm Mr. Write (Now) ($17 at Kohls) is a long-wearing eyeliner with a satiny-smooth texture that comes in 8 shades.

When I was on vacation in June, I stopped into a Kohls store to buy my son a new beach hat since the one we brought was too big and kept flopping into his eyes. On the way in, I spotted the Mr. Write (Now) eyeliners by The Balm and since I hadn't seen them before, I stopped to swatch a couple on my hand. My son was getting a little antsy so we ended up just getting his hat and leaving, and when we got back to the shore house I washed my hands like I usually do after being out shopping. That's when I realized that I needed to go back and get a few of these liners! They didn't budge or even smudge the tiniest bit through two hand washings with hand soap and one with a stronger dish soap that involved a lot of scrubbing. They finally started to break down when I pulled out my eye makeup remover, and by then I was impressed. I don't have oily eyelids but I have the worst time getting eyeliners to stay on my eyelids...even so-called long-wearing ones. The worst is at the corners...even the littlest cat eye wing tends to somehow smudge out toward my temple area at some point during the day, or just fade out all together. 

Is Hard Candy's Tiki Bronzer a Mary-Lou Manizer Dupe?

The Balm's Mary-Lou Manizer ($24 at Kohls) is my favorite powder highlighter...the color is so on-point, the shimmer is very fine with no chunks of glitter, and the soft buttery texture makes it really easy to blend. I think a lot of you feel the same way about it because over the years, finding a Mary-Lou Manizer dupe is something I've gotten many requests for. Whenever I review a new highlighter, I pull out Mary-Lou and see if it's a dupe, but so far I haven't found anything that comes close to the color...until now! 

It came from the most unlikely place too...a bronzer. Hard Candy's So Baked bronzer ($10 at Walmart) comes in four shades and the lightest one, Tiki is more golden than bronze. I assume it's meant to be a bronzer for fair skin tones but it's way too shimmery for all over bronzer use. That got me thinking about using it as a highlighter and when I compared it to Mary-Lou, well...see for yourself!

I've been drooling over The Balm's palettes since the line arrived at Kohls a few months ago.  I remember The Balm being carried at Sephora many years ago when I worked there but at the time, it was a very small line with mainly lip glosses and balms.  Over the years it's really expanded but I hadn't seen it in stores until it showed up recently at Kohls.

I've been wanting to buy the Nude 'Tude palette (and now another one has been released called Nude Dude!) but it's $36 so I've been holding off.  Then I found out that the Balm cosmetics is at Overstock.com and they have the Nude 'Tude palette for $21.99!

So that made me wonder what other products Overstock has from The Balm and I was surprised to see a bunch of them!  

The Balm Cindy-Lou Manizer Review and Swatches

Cindy-Lou Manizer ($24) is an all-in-one blush, eyeshadow and highlighter that was a total surprise purchase for me. A few months ago, one of my readers asked me if I had ever tried a highlighter from The Balm called Mary Lou-Manizer. She described it as a honey-gold colored powder that had a major cult following. I had never heard of it or come across it before, especially since my local Sephora stopped carrying The Balm.  

Then I went to my local Kohls and saw that they had recently started stocking some more upscale cosmetic lines including The Balm, and after trying the tester, I decided I had to splurge. The woman who rang me up said, "wow, that's a lot of money for a piece of makeup!" I told her I hoped it would be worth it!

When I got home, I realized that I had picked up Cindy-Lou Manizer instead of Mary-Lou Manizer. Someone must have put the box back in the wrong spot. Still, when I opened it and saw the beautiful rose-gold color, I decided to keep it.

The packaging on these Lou-Manizers is so cute! Cindy-Lou is known as a Con-tour artist and her rap sheet, mug shot, and fingerprints are on the box.

The product itself comes in a round pan with a mirror, and the size is very generous and should last quite a while.

The photo below shows the compact, but the lighting is making the product look more pink than it actually is. The close up and swatches below are accurate but I kept this next photo just so you could see what the compact looks like.

This close up shows the true color of Cindy-Lou- Manizer. The Balm describes it as a peachy pink, and I would also call it rose gold- it's such a gorgeous shade!

This powder is so super soft and pigmented, you don't have to rub it with your finger or swirl a brush around- all you have to do is tap it lightly into the powder.  Below, all I did was press my finger into it lightly and this is how much came up. So this will last such a long time, it really makes it worth the price.

Here it is on my skin- the swatch is heavier than how I would normally apply it, but I wanted it to show up on camera. This can be used as a subtle blush, but my favorite way to apply it is to take a fluffy powder brush and brush a 3 on each side of my face. I'll explain- start at the outer corner of your forehead, and sweep the brush in an arc around to the temple and down to the cheekbone, then another arc around to the chin. So it's in the shape of a 3 on the side of your face. Repeat on the other side. This way, it gives you a glow in all the right spots without brushing it all over which would be too much.

Overall, I am in love with Cindy-Lou Manizer! It gives my face a perfect candlelit glow without being sparkly or obnoxious. The peachy pink warms my fair complexion without being too dark like a bronzer. I still really want to try Mary-Lou, but I better wait until it's in the budget. For now, I'm calling Cindy-Lou Splurgeworthy.
