I've been on a bit of a hair product kick recently so I thought I would share my thoughts with you on some of the products I've purchased over the past few weeks. Rather than posting individual reviews, I figured it might be quicker to do more of a round-up style post, especially since I know a lot of you are curious about some of these, especially the Garnier Whole Blends.
That being said, if you still have questions at the end of this post, I definitely encourage you to ask them in the comments, since I'll be going over each product in a broad sense rather than going into too much detail. :)
Let's take a look!
Garnier recently released their Whole Blends line and I purchased a few products at Walgreens to try. I ended up buying the Coconut Oil and Cocoa Butter shampoo and conditioner solely based on the scent, rather than what it's supposed to do...a bad move perhaps, but it wouldn't be the first time I've bought shampoo based on the scent alone (#guilty).
This is a smoothing formula that I feel is probably best suited to thicker, drier hair with more frizz. I found that it weighs my fine hair down and feels almost like it has a coating on it. It does hydrate and soften my dry, damaged hair but it's just way too heavy since I have a fine texture. I probably should have gone with the Honey formula (which I almost bought) or the Apple and Green Tea one. I just couldn't resist the delicious coconut and cocoa butter scent. It's not a suntan-lotion type of scent either, in case you're curious. It's heavier and deeper than that, definitely tropical but it has more of a sensual vibe. I think I'll gift these to my sister who loves coconut just as much as I do but has much thicker hair.
The Honey Treasures Repairing Mask on the other hand, is amazing! This one doesn't weigh my hair down at all and it really helps to strengthen and smooth the damaged ends of my hair. It also smells divine...warm and sweet! I leave this on for about 3-5 minutes and use it in place of regular conditioner once or twice a week. I highly recommend this one and will probably go back and get the shampoo and conditioner.
The Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Fresh Cut Split End Mender ($24) was more of a splurge purchase but I couldn't resist the claim of having that "freshly cut" look all the time. It looks like a body lotion when it comes out of the tube (it's white and feels thick) but it sinks into your hair with no sticky or heavy feeling. I have a fine textured "lob" that just grazes my shoulders and I use about a nickel-sized amount when my hair is wet, focusing on the mid-shaft to ends. You're supposed to use it before any other styling products like leave-in conditioner, mousse, etc. Then I use a small dab once it's dry just on the ends.
So far I can say that this really works. My ends don't look nearly as straggly and my hair has that "swing" that it has when I first get it cut. The results seem to be cumulative...the first time I used it, my hair looked a little bit better but after a week it looks a lot better. Living Proof claims that this product "zips" your split ends back together rather than gluing or sticking them back, (which is what other split-end menders do). I'm not sure how the science behind it works but I do know that my dry, damaged hair looks so much better when I use this!
Schwarzkopf Ultime Biotin Hair Filler Serum ($6.97 at Walmart)- This is from Claudia Schiffer's line for Schwarzkopf and it's exclusive to Walmart. I bought it on a whim one day while I was in the store because I'm always looking for products to plump up my fine, thin hair. I honestly wasn't expecting much but oh my gosh...this stuff is amazing!!! If you have fine hair, you have to try this. It looks like an oil, but it's actually similar to a face serum...it's thin, not greasy and absorbs immediately. I use it on damp hair and it disappears into my hair with absolutely no weight...I don't even feel like I have anything in my hair at all.
But after blow drying, my hair is soft, smooth (it seems to fill in and smooth damaged areas) and has a lot more volume. I'm so happy to finally try a volumizing product that isn't sticky like mousse or root spray. It seems to be sold out online at the moment, but I'm sure you can probably find it in store at Walmart.
So those are my recent hair product purchases! Have you tried any hair products lately that you're loving right now? Or ones that you regret buying? I'd love to hear about it!
I have to be so careful about the products I use on my fine, thin hair, so I am very excited to try the Ultime hair filler serum! While on the subject of products for this hair type, I would like to give a shout out to the John Frieda Sheer Blonde crystal clear hair spray. I just started using it recently and it is the one I've found works best for me. It doesn't weigh my hair down, and also importantly, it is one of the very few hairsprays that doesn't make my scalp break out after using it. Another plus is that, true to its claim, it really does seem to 'keep blonde shimmering and bright.' They have a comparable product line for brunettes as well.
ReplyDeleteOh I really need to try that! I love the sheer blonde line...when I was blonde, I always used the shampoos and conditioners. They have a purple one to tone brassiness and the Go Blonder one to lighten your hair even more and they're both fabulous. I'm actually going back to blonde hair for the summer so I've been thinking about getting some John Frida...I'll have to add the hairspray, thanks for the tip!
DeleteYou're welcome! It sounds like the entire John Frieda Sheer Blonde line is fabulous. I also recently started using the Highlight Activating Brightening Shampoo and Conditioner and am thrilled with the results. Instead of my color fading as time goes on it seems to be getting even more vibrant since I started using the Sheer Blonde products. The only product type not in the line is a volumizer, so I can't wait to get the Ultime serum, and then I'll be all set with hair products!
DeleteI've heard good things about the Living Proof Serum... really want to try! The whole new Garnier line looks amazing, I can't figure out what to try from it so far.

I had a hard time figuring out what to try in that line too because there are so many formulas and a lot of them seem to apply to my hair type. I thought about the apple & green tea to give me volume, then I thought maybe the coconut water one for hydration because my hair is dry. There's also one for color treated hair that applies to me as well. Arrghh...it was too hard to choose! But I really love the honey mask so I think I'll go back and get the shampoo and conditioner...it's a strengthening formula (which also applies to my hair, lol) and doesn't weigh my hair down.
DeleteOh, I love the Garnier whole blends, especially the Honey is lovely! I haven't actually seen the Coconut one, but I might not pick it up now (even though I love coconut), since based on your review it sounds like something that would be much too nourishing for my hair. xx

Hi Jenni! I actually saw two coconut formulas (I love coconut too!) there's one in a blue bottle (coconut water I think) that is a hydrating formula and then the ones in the brown bottles (coconut and cocoa butter) that I bought are a frizz smoothing formula. I got the impression from reading the bottles that the blue coconut water one would be more lightweight but I liked the scent of the brown bottles a little bit better. I should have gone with the blue ones- maybe those would work better for you! :)
DeleteI was intrigued by the Garnier whole blends honey treasures repairing mask once I saw that the ingredients list is very similar to that of L'oreal Advanced Haircare Total Repair 5 Damage Erasing Balm (my HG, the one and only conditioner that I use and have a back up just in case). It transformed my thick, coarse, over processed hair back to life. Instead of just sitting on top of it like other silicone products, this one goes right in and magically fixes hair from within, leaving it strong, bouncy, shiny, and sleek. If your hair type is similar to mine, you MUST give it a try. Ok I digress... So yeah, I gathered all my CVS and manufacturing coupons and bought the Garnier repairing mask for free at CVS. The honey smell is divine and I reeeeaaally hope that it works just like the L'oreal one. I tried Living Proof PHD fresh cut split end mender and had to return it back to Sephora. It made my hair so rough and frizzy that I could feel the brush fight against resistance as I'm sliding it through my hair. What a shame for such a high priced item. My Garnier Sleek and Shine Moroccan sleek oil treatment seals my split ends, leaving hair silky, shiny and strong for a fraction of the cost. I'd like to try the Garnier Whole Blends shampoo as well once I use up my big stack of shampoos.

OMG! Bought the Honey Repair Mask and I just love it. I don't wash my hair everyday so I use it every time I wash. I've replaced my previous conditioner with this and it softens my color treated hair so well that I no longer need to use a leave in conditioner. I can comb right through my hair like buttah!!!! I just can't say enough good things about it! And I'm getting tons of compliments too!
ReplyDeleteJust an update. So I tried the Garnier Whole Blends Honey Treasures Repairing Mask and...WOW!!! It is a dupe for the L'oreal Advanced Haircare 5-in-1 damage erasing balm. The honey smell lingers on for 24 hours after application, but it's totally pleasant and not a least bit annoying. It makes my hair oh-so-soft and strong. I use it in place of a regular conditioner and it doesn't leave behind a residue. So, yeah, a must have product for coarse, thick, over processed hair.
