I purchased the new bh Cosmetics
Modern Neutrals 28 Color Eyeshadow Palette ($12) during a recent haul and I'm finally ready to share my thoughts after using it for about a week or so. The thing that first drew me to this palette is that it contains
all-matte shades. I already own a few matte palettes, such as The Balm's Meet Matt(e) and Meet Matt(e) Trimony, the Lorac Pro Matte, and the Urban Decay Ultimate Naked Basics, but none of those have a shade range quite this large. As I get older, I find that I've been turning toward more matte shades and using them all over my eyes (and I
always use them as a transition shade even if I'm using shimmer on my lid). So I'm craving a bit more variety lately and at $12, this was basically an impulse purchase. I had no idea what to expect and figured I didn't have too much to lose if I didn't like it.
Let's take a look!
The
Modern Neutrals Palette comes in a large plastic compact with a clear, slightly frosted lid so you can see the shades through the top. In the photo above, you can see how the eyeshadows look a bit blurry through the lid, but you can still see the colors easily. It's very lightweight and feels a bit flimsy, but I've learned not to judge palettes based on packaging. Of course it's always nice to have a beautiful, weighty compact but as long as the product inside is great, I don't pay too much attention to what the outside looks like.
The back of the palette has a description and the ingredient list.
To give you an idea of how large this palette is, I put it next to a few of my other palettes. There's a
lot of product inside at
1.38 oz.
The Modern Renaissance Palette contains .35 oz., the Urban Decay Naked Palette holds .33 oz of product, and the Tarte Tartelette in Bloom Palette weighs in at .636 oz. So the bh Cosmetics Modern Neutrals palette contains roughly 4 times the amount of product of the Naked and Modern Renaissance Palettes and double the amount of the Tartelette Palette.
Inside, there are no mirrors or brushes...it's a very simple palette with 28 shades, 7 in each row.
One of the things I love about it is that it has a ton of transition and crease shades! I've found that even when I'm using another palette, I can go back to this one and find the perfect transition or crease color to go with whatever eye look I'm trying to create.
On the downside, it has only 2 (maybe 3) browbone highlight shades, but they work well for me so I can't complain too much...there's just not as much variety as there could be.
The top two rows contain warmer shades, while the bottom two rows are cooler, smokier shades. For $12, I really wasn't expecting a high level of pigmentation, especially since matte shades can be tricky to formulate. But I was pleasantly surprised when I swatched the first shade and it felt so soft to the touch with excellent color payoff!
Every shade is soft and highly pigmented, but particularly the first three rows. I had no trouble blending these on my eyes and they lasted all day over primer. I swatched them below without primer and the shades really seem to come alive on the skin vs. in the pan. They do have a bit of fallout due to the softer formula but I don't mind that at all...I prefer this kind of formula because it's easier to pick up with a brush.

Overall, I'm really impressed with this palette! For $12 you get a ton of product, a huge variety of colors, and a soft, highly pigmented formula. This one is definitely a win!

This looks amazing!! It's great to see a matte palette that is so versatile and affordable :D
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way! It's great quality and the price is fantastic!
DeleteI neeeeed!!! This is the perfect palette for me as I'm just getting into makeup artistry. I have to build a kit which is a pretty big expense so I'm always looking for affordable options that have a good variety of shades for all skin tones. Thank you for always finding these hidden gems. First time commenter but I've been reading for over a year and I love your blog! Keep it up.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for commenting and for reading my blog for the past year! I'm so glad this is something you'll be able to use starting out as a makeup artist.:) I have a good friend who's doing it right now too and she's been telling me how expensive it is to build a good kit.
DeleteSorry to be a party pooper but I'm wondering if you used the shadows on your eyes yet. I had this palette, it does indeed look/swatch nice, but I had a terrible time with application; I'm pretty stubborn and will make something work. But I gave up on this, and BH eye shadows in general. Love their liquid eyeliners though! -- Christina D.
ReplyDeleteAw that's too bad...did you find it didn't blend well or just didn't show up? I really didn't have a problem applying it on my eyes at all. I'm no expert by any means but I've been able to create the looks I wanted with it. I have hooded eyes though so I don't really attempt any complicated looks that require a lot of blending. I typically use 3 colors at the most (including my highlight) and I always use primer. I have noticed that the brush you use makes a big difference...some eyeshadows apply nicely with some brushes and terribly with others. On a side note, I definitely have to try those liquid liners...I've been looking for some good ones, thanks for the suggestion!
DeleteI'm so glad it worked for you. I had issues blending: the color wiped away as I blended and I always use a primer. I think you may be right and different brushes -- perhaps even those sponge-tip applicators -- might make a difference. But I'm over and done with it.
ReplyDeleteYes, the felt-tip eyeliner pens from BH and cheap and pretty darn good. -- Christina D.
Brushes can definitely make a difference but also matte eyeshadows are by nature drier and don't 'stick' as well as shimmers do.
DeleteI just picked this up based on your swatches, I'd been debating and you sold me. I have the modern mattes palette which I love so I'm looking forward to getting this. Thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteI'm a matte shadow fan -- the vast majority of my stash is -- and know how to work with them. As I said, I couldn't make this palette work for me but good for those of you who did. I also think there is a level of expectation: while I do not expect a $12 palette to work as well as a higher-end palette, I did expect it to be at least as good as some of my drugstore buys, but alas, it was not. -- Christina D.
ReplyDeleteI got this when it first came out and I love it. For $12 you can't beat the pigmentation, it is almost high-end quality!!! I just discovered your blog recently and love all your reviews. My friends and I have been buying so much makeup because of you. <3
ReplyDeleteI loveeee this palette. It was recommended to me by another blogger and I have used it every day since I got it. The colors are soft and beautiful with great pigmentation. If anyone is on the fence about it, I say get it!
ReplyDeleteI bought this when it was on sale for $8 just because. It is fantastic. I was eyeing the new Naked palette, but really, for $8 this is all I need for mattes right now. I love mixing this with my other palettes or using it all alone.
ReplyDeleteHi there! Can you please do a swatch comparison of the ABH modern renaissance and this 28 color palette? I want to see if the colors in this palette are suitable dupes for the ABH
ReplyDeleteHi, I was wondering if you knew the weight of each pan? I noticed that the weight of this palette is less vs other 28 pan palettes and their 26 blushed neutrals palette (1.57Oz/45grams). I'm not sure whether this weight difference is just the difference in packaging.
