New! Biolage Cleansing Conditioners at Ulta

Lately, I've been trying to co-wash as much as possible, avoiding shampoo to see if it makes a difference in my hair. I started with Wen and since that's really expensive, I've been using the Herbal Essences Naked Cleansing Conditioner in between.  I've been trying to grow my hair out and I need it to be as healthy as possible since my hair is thin and has a tendency to break, especially after using heat tools and coloring.
So I was excited to see some new options from Biolage that just arrived at Ulta.  The great thing about these is that they're tailored to your specific hair type, instead of the typical one-size-fits-all model.  They have a version for fine, thin hair like mine that doesn't weigh it down, one for medium hair for those who have a medium volume and texture, one for curly hair, and one for coarse hair. They're not cheap, at $26 for 16.9 oz. but they are a little less expensive than Wen, which is $32 for a 16 oz. bottle.
Medium Hair, Fine Hair, Curly Hair, Coarse Hair
They also have a 33.8 oz version for $35, which is actually a better value.

Are you a fan of co-washing?  Would you try this?

  1. I've never tried co-washing, but I've been reading a lot about it lately. I'm nervous to try it because my hair can get limp and lifeless quickly. I like that they have different formulas for different hair types. I might have to try this method, but I think I'll start wit the Herbal Essences to see how it goes before I invest a lot into it. Excited to hear what you think about the Biolage version if you try it.

    1. The first few times I tried it, I got limp, greasy hair and then one night I was watching QVC and Chaz Dean was on promoting Wen. He walked through all of the steps and I realized that I was doing it all wrong! There are a few tricks...first, make sure your hair is soaking wet... run it under the water for a solid minute. Then you have to use a ton of pumps...it seems like a waste of product but it's the only way it works (this is why Wen gets crazy expensive but it's not so bad with the Herbal Essences). I have medium length hair and I use 8 pumps for the top section, then 8 more for the middle to ends for a total of 16. I rake it through and then add a little water to really emulsify it and help it spread more evenly. Then I rinse and repeat the 16 pumps a second time and leave it on for the rest of my shower, then rinse at the end. Chaz Dean stressed this a lot...you have to do it twice. The first wash removes the dirt, but it takes another wash to get rid of some of the oil that weighs your hair down...conditioner isn't as strong as shampoo so it doesn't cut through it as easily. At first I thought, OK he just wants us to use it up faster to sell more product, but once I followed his directions to the letter, my hair looked great and not weighed down at all!

    2. Wow! That is a lot of product! I'm glad that I read it from someone who's actually tried it because I would have thought he just wanted to sell more product too. Thanks for the detailed explanation. That's why I've put off trying it, because I didn't know how to use it. Love your blog!

  3. I just picked up a co-washing conditioner the other day- I went with the L'oreal EverCreme Cleansing Conditioner, based on a recommendation from a blog post- since I have color treated hair, I wanted to be careful! I haven't used it yet, but I did wash my hair this am with a clarifying shampoo, Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy shampoo- which I loved! My hair feels bouncy and my scalp finally doesn't feel stripped and dry. This product was on Allure's Best of Beauty 2014 list, so I was excited to try it!!

    1. Hi Jamie! I just picked up the EverCreme one too! I used it last night and I washed twice with it. The second time through it actually lathered! Afterwards, my hair felt dry, which surprised me because usually co-washing leaves my hair really soft plus this one is supposed to be moisturizing. I'm thinking I like the Herbal Essences one betier but I'm going to try the L'Oréal a few more times to give it a fair chance.

  5. This was recommended to me after a salon visit and because I have fine, thin hair I thought I would give it a try. Warning though it cost almost 3 times as much as a retail store shampoo. After the first pump what you will notice first is that strong orange oil smell. It is very strong to me and if you don't like that smell I would steer clear from this product. The recommendation is 6-8 pumps through your hair. After two weeks it did work very well. Light, clean, and less hair falling out but for the price I am not sure I would stick with it. 6. I am a faithful user of this product and I do use 8 pumps for my short hair. My hair is healthier and it doesn't fall out anymore. I used to take a medication that would literately make my hair fall out by the handful. I think 16 pumps twice a day is a bit extreme but I guess it depends on the length. It took me several weeks to get used this product but I am glad I stuck to it because it does work. I use it 5-6 days per week and then I alternate with the Nioxin cleanser and conditioner (1-2 times per week) #2 for thinning hair. I buy the product with my sister (we split the cost) so we buy it from Ulta when the store has a sale "Buy 2 get one FREE" for both products. $35 a bottle is a lot of product so it lasts us quite a long time; we save $35 each time we buy it. The Nioxin is more expensive $50 for the big bottle but Ulta also has the sale "Buy 2 get one FREE". I know a lot of people who have tried it and did not like it. My advise is to stick with it for at least two weeks and you be the judge of it. Everyone has a different opinion. Good luck!
