Today was a rainy, thunderstormy kind of day here in New England and I couldn't think of anything better to do than stay in and try on new clothes! It was perfect timing that I got my first Stitch Fix today and I was so excited.
About Stitch Fix:
For those of you who aren't familiar with Stitch Fix, it's like a subscription box, but with clothes. It costs $20 for a "fix" and you can just do it one time, or set up recurring ones. You fill out a pretty extensive style profile that includes your body type, sizes, and style preferences, as well as how much you want to spend on each item. You can even build a Pinterest board with style inspiration to share with them so that they can get an idea of your taste. Then, you schedule your fix and your own personal stylist gets to work on putting together 5 pieces for you. They ship them right to your house and you have 3 days to try everything on and decide whether you want to keep it. Anything you want to keep, you'll be charged for, minus the $20 you paid up front, and they include a postage-paid envelope to return the things you don't want. If you don't keep anything, you're out the $20 styling fee.
When I opened the box, there was a note on top...
"Hi Jen! Welcome to Stitch Fix! I know that you do not want to go shopping with a one year old, so I will do my best to get your wardrobe needs taken care of! I started off with the boyfriend jean. Wear it with a chambray top and put the raglan top over it, or just the raglan if it's still not too cold. Next, a stretchy, comfy pair of slip on jeans with this comfy dolman top. These two outfits will allow you to chase your sweet baby while still feeling put together :). I look forward to hearing back from you! Tiffany."
One of the coolest things about Stitch Fix is that they send you styling cards that show each item and two ways to wear it. I'll show each card with each item so you can see their suggestions on how to wear it.
Everything was packed neatly in the box with tissue paper around it.
Dolman Top:

Stitch Fix has this top styled with skinny jeans and flats with a denim jacket, or with black leggings and booties. I opted to try the second look since this top was really oversized. Usually I like wearing long drapey tops with a sleeker bottom like leggings, because I feel like jeans add too much bulk (at least on me).
Final Verdict: Sent Back. This was a really comfy and cute shirt, but it was $48 and I felt like I could get a top like this at Target or Forever 21 for much less. If it was a sweater, or something really special, I would have kept it.

Final Verdict: Sent Back. Although these jeans were comfy, I have too many pairs of blue skinny jeans in my life right now and these aren't cheap at $78. (I paired them with a sweater from Abercrombie and Fitch.

Raglan Top:

The styling cards show this top with boyfriend jeans and also with skinnies, but in her note to me, Tiffany suggested wearing this layered over a chambray shirt with the boyfriend jeans, so that's what I did. I never would have thought of denim-on-denim, but somehow it works with this shirt layered on top.
Final Verdict: Sent Back. This top was cute, but $58 is a lot to spend on what's basically a thin sweatshirt. Even though it was cute, I don't think it's fifty-eight-dollars-cute. The jeans I paired this with are the boyfriends that I also got in the box...more on those next.

The style card has these paired with a loose v-neck and long cardigan or a flowy tank. I wore mine with the raglan top, above, and also below with a v-neck, ballet flats and a scarf.

Final Verdict: Sent Back. I already have two other pair of boyfriend-style jeans from Abercrombie that I love and wear all the time. I love boyfriend jeans, but I don't want to pay $78 for ones that are so similar to the two I already own.
Houndstooth Infinity Scarf:

Final Verdict: Sent Back. This scarf was really cute, cozy and warm! But again, I found that $32 for an infinity scarf is a lot, since I tend to buy them at Target and Forever 21 for really cheap.
Below, I paired it with an olive green parka from Abercrombie & Fitch and brown faux suede Mossimo flat booties from Target that I got last year.

Overall, even though I sent everything back, this was a great learning experience for me! I'll definitely try Stitch Fix again, but first I'll adjust my style profile and lower the prices that I'm willing to pay on certain items. I'll also let them know that I don't need boyfriend jeans right now, or blue skinny jeans (I actually need some black ones!). I had so much fun trying everything on in my own home while my son was napping, rather than in a store while trying to entertain him. Yes, I lost $20, but at the same time, I learned quite a bit about pairing certain items of clothing together, what works and what doesn't. So the experience was totally worth it for me!

You should have kept something like the scarf because you deduct the $20 styling fee that you have to pay so the scarf would've only been $12.
ReplyDeleteVery true. Never lose money on a fix even if the lowest priced item is something you'd never wear. Give it away as a gift.
