Laura Mercier Fall In Love Face Illuminator Collection Review

When I went to the Sephora VIB Rouge sale last Saturday, I had every intention of buying the new Urban Decay Naked Illuminated Trio but when I swatched it, I was really disappointed...it was all glitter and no color with a dry texture. Then I spotted the Laura Mercier Fall in Love Face Illuminator Collection ($58) and was instantly impressed by the soft, creamy texture of the powders and the finely milled, shimmery (not glittery) finish. So even though this little palette cost as much as the entire Too Faced Chocolate Shop set, I couldn't resist splurging on it.

Now that I've had it home for a few days, do I love it as much as I did when I first bought it? Read on to hear my thoughts...
The Fall in Love Illuminator Palette comes in a leopard-print plastic compact that's really chic and simple. There's no writing or logos at all on the front side and the back has the shade names, weight information, and country of origin which is Italy.
Inside are Laura's four illuminators, and they're about a third of the size of the full-sized versions, which are $44 each. These work out to about $14.60 each, which ends up being $58.60. So cost-wise, you're not really saving anything but it's not overpriced either.
In fact, I rarely ever hit pan on a highlighter so for me, buying full sizes can be a waste of money. I've always wanted to try Laura Mercier's highlighters so I felt like this was the perfect way to try all four shades without spending $176 on the full sizes.
The four shades included are:

  • Indiscretion- Warm rose gold highlight
  • Addiction- Gilded Gold Highlight
  • Devotion- Cool Highlight
  • Seduction- Soft Bronze Highlight

Unfortunately, I should have known by looking at the palette that 3 of these shades would be too dark for my fair skin, but I was temporarily blinded by the beautiful texture of these...and the fact that I've always wanted to try Laura Mercier's Face Illuminator formula. I suppose I could use them as eyeshadows, but I'm honestly debating whether to keep this or not. I probably won't use it that much for myself, but as a blogger, I feel like I should have this in my collection to do comparison swatches in the future. So I'm kind of up in the air about whether I should bring it back.

As I was swatching the shades, I thought I noticed some similarities between these shades and a few of the shades in the NYX Strobe of Genius palette. So I pulled that out to do some comparison swatching (speaking of comparisons...haha!).
As it turns out, there are no perfect matches but I was able to get pretty close with three out of four shades! The Laura Mercier shades go on a little bit richer and deeper but once they're sheered out on your face, you can't really tell the difference.

Overall, if you own the NYX Strobe of Genius palette or have fair to light skin, you may want to skip this one. But if you're looking for a luxury highlighting palette to give as a gift (or to splurge on for yourself), this is a great choice. The formula is excellent and it's a much less expensive option than buying all four of the full sizes. I feel that these will last a long time since a little goes a long way and the pans are still a pretty generous size.

  1. Oh my it's gorgeous! Great photos, you're right the colours look quite dark which is a shame for those with pale skin but at least this gives those with deeper skins something to play and glow with. Beautiful post, really like the packaging too x

  2. Seeing the NYX strobe of genius palette has sparked my interest in it for the first time. How would you recommend I use a purple or yellow shade on upper far left top? I have light-medium skin during the summer that goes light during the winter. Would the shimmer/highlight factor be too much for oily skin. Thanks.

  3. Excellent and thorough review as always! I SO appreciate the timely posts on these holiday sets. I keep trying to decide what to get but I don't want to wait too long and have them sell out. You've really helped me to narrow down my choices. I love your blog!!!

    1. ^^^ YES to the above! I recently discovered your blog thru IG and I'm addicted. You are a true makeup lover just like me and I love it! I am so getting this palette. I have a medium olive toned complexion and at least 3 of these shades will be amazing on my skin. The brown one I'm thinking maybe could be a bronzer if it isn't too shimmery. Otherwise eye shadow it is!

  4. I have the full size in Addiction and it's stunning, love it! And yes, it will last a long long time. I was tempted by this palette, but I think the pink is going to look too ashy against me and Seduction will be too dark, so I skipped. But don't these pans remind you of butter cream frosting swirled on top of little cupcakes? (Katherine T.)

  6. What a good find -- I'd go for the NYX anytime. Thanks for this bit of investigative work!! There have been so many illuminator palettes -- who needs another at a big price tag? By the way, I'm in Europe now and there have been a few stories about how 'made in Italy' doesn't mean much. Many workers in Italy & other European countries are illegal immigrants and the companies who hire them (in the stories about this trend, covered in the European press) are the top line fashion designers and beauty brands. Workers aren't paid well and the ingredients for cosmetics are imported from China (all pigments today are made in China). These are illegal sweatshops. Probably the most conscientious and honest cosmetic manufacturers today are independent small-batch Etsy (or similar) online sellers who make in their homes. Sorry to be a killjoy at this time of glitzy Christmas packages, but I think we should all know this, especially for the big price tags the brands are asking, and the millions they will make this season. Thanks for your review here; it's appreciated!

    1. I googled this and could only come with stories on Chinese sweatshops for clothing in Italy but didn't see anything about beauty products. Also, the articles I found mentioned "fast fashion" not luxury fashion. While I'm no expert on this subject, I can't imagine a high-end luxury brand such as Laura Mercier utilizing a sweatshop and I doubt they would risk their reputation to save a few bucks. People have a way of finding out- remember Forever 21 a few years ago?

    2. That's a good question, but I think we should remember, that most of the cosmetic brands made in Italy still are good quality and not prodused with illegal immigrants in poor working conditions. Of course, if you know the name of the brand, which is made like that, I would NOT buy it.. (Sorry my poor english, I'm from Europe and it isn't my first language:( And how about Nyx, it's made in China, which is not known about good working conditions..?

  7. Here's Reuters' version of the story on illegal Chinese workers manning the Italian luxury goods market ... there are many other stories if anyone cares to search.
