Sephora Play May 2016 Unboxing

After months of waiting, I finally got an invite for the Sephora Play box in April and my first box arrived yesterday! It costs $10 a month and includes 5 samples (plus a fragrance bonus) The May 2016 theme is "Forces of Nature"...here's the official description:

Earth to Beauty: This month, discover products that are high performing — and good for you, too. Take your beauty back to its roots with hardworking formulas like a brightening facial treatment for petal-soft skin, an antioxidant-rich lipstick made with organic ingredients, and more products that prove that looking beautiful is only natural.

It came in a really cute black and white striped box, and inside, there's a guide to all of the products, including tips on how to use them. The products themselves came housed in a cute little drawstring bag...I really appreciate the extra attention to detail instead of just throwing the samples into a box loose (I've had several subscription boxes over the years that do that!).

This month, there were two makeup samples (both lip products), two skincare samples (really four if you count each Origins mask separately), one hair product, and one perfume. Play also comes with a card that you can bring in to Sephora and get 50 extra Beauty Insider points with any purchase. So basically, if you go in and spend $50, you'll get those 50 points, plus 50 more using the card. 100 points gets you another deluxe sample, so it's a pretty good deal.

The first product I saw was the new Origins Maskimizer Skin Optimizing-Mask Primer ($22). You spray this on before applying a mask and it's supposed to improve the way your mask goes into your skin as well as hydrating, soothing, and boosting your skin's radiance. Also included are two Origins Masks to try...Clear Improvement ($26) which is a charcoal mask to clear your pores and Drink Up Intensive an overnight mask to quench dry, dehydrated skin.

Also included is a deluxe sized tube of Korres Wild Rose Advanced Brightening Sleeping Facial ($48). I've been wanting to try this overnight mask because it has a high dose of Vitamin C to help brighten your skin and fade dark spots in 14 days. I'm not sure if this tube will last that long, but it might, depending on how much I have to use to cover my face. I'm looking forward to trying it!

Next up is the Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask ($36). I've tried this treatment before via Birchbox and Ipsy and I do like it....but I'm not in love with it. It's a conditioner that hydrates my hair and doesn't weigh it down, but I didn't see results like I would from a deep conditioning mask, which is what this is supposed to be. I am happy that Sephora is giving this sample in a tube because my previous samples of this were in a tiny jar, which wasn't as easy to use.

The two lip products in the May box are Tarte's Tartiest Lip Crayon ($18) in Latergram (which is described as mauve, but I found it to be a little warmer than your typical pinky cool-toned mauve) and Bite Beauty's Amuse Bouche Lipstick ($26) in Kimchi (described as a shocking pink). The Tarte lip pencil is really creamy and I like the nude pinky brown shade. The Amuse Bouche lipstick is a beautiful formula...very creamy and hydrating but also long-lasting. I'm not a fan of the bright color and can't really see myself wearing it but I like the formula so much, I'll probably get one in another color.
Both lipstick samples were nice deluxe sizes that'll last quite a long time.

The fragrance bonus was a sample vial of Atelier's Orange Sanguine Absolue Pure Perfume ($120). This perfume is at a higher price point than I would normally pay for perfume so I've never tried any of Atelier's fragrances. That being said, when I first opened this vial, I smelled oranges right away, and while it was pleasant I wasn't sure I wanted to smell like an orange. Still, I wanted to be able to talk about it on the blog so I put a little on my wrist and after a few minutes, it morphed from straight-up orange into a really beautiful, fresh citrus scent with a bit of warmth to it. It made me think of sitting in the warm sun in the middle of an orange grove that's near the ocean. I immediately dabbed some more on my neck and was impressed that it lasted most of the day. This isn't a scent I would normally go for, but it was a really nice discovery!

Overall, I really like the Sephora Play box but I'm not 100% sold on it just yet. I cancelled my other subscription boxes because they were always sending the same products over and over again and including brands that I wasn't interested in. So far, I like the brands that Sephora included in this box but I'll have to give it a few months to see how I like the subscription overall.

Have you gotten a Sephora Play box yet? What do you think of this subscription so far?

  1. How long did you have to wait for your invite? I got on the wait list about a month ago and still haven't heard anything.

    1. I signed up when I first heard about the box over the summer and just got an invite in April. But back then, they were only testing it in a few different cities, and now I think it's nationwide so the invites are coming much faster than they were before. I hope you get one soon! :)

  2. I cancelled all of my other subscription boxes and only kept Play! I like it MUCH better than others. Not only because ALL of the samples are brands I have heard of (unlike Ipsy) but also because I get samples of products I know I really WANT or at least have on my list of want to trys! (Like the Kat Von D eyeliner or the Amuse Bouche). The colors are not always what I would pick for myself but it gives me a chance to break out of my beauty box without spending a ton of money or at least try the formula even if the color or scent isn't my cup of tea. Their samples are also not the same samples that you have received from every other company. The only think I am not a big fan of is the little bag ironically. I liked the shredded paper better because after Ipsy I am OVER getting a new little bag every month. Who needs all those bags? I would rather have another sample than another bag! But overall I LOVE Play and have converted quite a few of my friends.

    1. Oh my gosh, I couldn't agree with you more! I love being able to try products that are easily accessible at Sephora AND all luxury brands because those are the ones you want to make sure you like before dropping the big bucks on them. And yes, the bag is super cute but I'm not sure what I'll use it for. I have stacks of IPSY bags sitting around because I feel bad throwing them away, haha. :)

    1. I went back and forth on it because subscription boxes have disappointed me in the past but now I'm glad I signed up. The lipstick is such a gorgeous formula, I definitely need to go to Sephora and pick a shade now. :)

  4. This is my second Play! box and while I do like it a lot better than Ipsy, I'm definitely underwhelmed. I get more excited waiting for the new Target box to become available. I'll probably give it a few more months to see if my feelings change, but so far, "meh".

    1. I really liked this box but I'm still wary of subscription boxes in general so I'll give it a few months and see what happens. I have hope for this one though, because I would be really happy to try just about any brand that Sephora carries, unlike some other subscription services! :)

  5. Great post!! I've been hesitant to order any box considering it seems to be the new "thing". This box though definitely seems to be worth its $10, can't wait to see next month's box. That lipstick looks like a great summer color even if it's a little bold. Thanks for sharing with us.

    1. Aww, thanks my pleasure! :) The lipstick is really pretty, I just feel silly wearing bright colors since I'm kind of a shy person. I like to fade into the background a bit, haha. I love the formula though!

  6. Are the products in the box customizable based on your skin tone/type and individual style preference or everyone gets the same thing?

    2. I recently noticed that there is a section on the Sephora website in your account that lets you fill out a Play profile. I don't think they have utilized it yet, but it does ask for things like skin/hair concerns, skin tone, etc. I am loving this box!

    3. I filled that out too...I hope this means they'll tailor the boxes to your preferences in the future! :) It seems like right now, everyone gets the same box.

  7. Not bad! I quite like the contents. But yeah, it's hard to find a box that TRULY meets your expectations 100%.

    1. Definitely! Unless you're picking out the samples yourself. Someone should make a box like that! :)

    2. There is a box that leta you pick your own samples - choix.

    3. You're right Jillian, I stand corrected! :) I reviewed Choix a while back...it was great! It's more expensive by double but it may be worth it to some people to be able to have their choice of samples.

    4. Julep Maven lets you customize everything in their boxes. I've had this one the longest for this reason.

    5. I still have Julep too. This is the first month they let me completely customize it and I was really surprised (and happy!). They used to let you semi-customize and swap out one item but this morning, I was able to build a box exactly how I wanted it for next month. How cool is that?!

  8. That's great to hear! I'm excited to get more boxes. :)

  9. Same as you I'm kind of Meh about it, maybe all the hype and wait listing had me expecting unicorns and angels to fly out of it or something I dunno, lol!
I get a few other beauty boxes so have to give it a couple months to see who is worth keeping and who isn't. The bag itself was cute, I thought, something different anyway.

  10. I like my box better than Ipsy which I keep meaning to cancel then forget to do it. I like a little more mainstream brands like Sephora sent. I'm going to continue with it for awhile. I really love the Atelier perfumes! They are outside of my price range and I always do a little mental happy dance when I get a sample!

I love getting comments from you and hearing about your experiences with the products, whether you agree with me or not. It's the best way other readers can get the best information before they buy, so keep the comments coming! :)
