Garnier Ultra Lift Pro Gravity Defying Cream Review

I have been dying to review Garnier’s new Ultra Lift Pro Gravity Defying Cream, but I wanted to wait the four weeks that Garnier said it would take to see results, before I blogged about it.  This is my first go-around with a drugstore skin cream in about five years, and I am anxious to see if a more inexpensive product will work as well as the higher-end products I’ve used during the past several years working at Sephora.  One thing I have noticed is that drugstore anti-aging creams seem to be using the same technologies as many of the more expensive brands, which is definitely a good thing!

The main active ingredient in Garnier’s Ultra Lift Pro is Pro-Xylane, which is a sugar-based molecule from the Beech Tree that stimulates the production of glycoaminoglycans   (From now on, I’ll just refer to them as GAGs).  GAG's nourish and protect collagen and elastin, which are the very things that provide structure and firmness to the skin, acting sort of like a netting underneath the surface.  When a piece of that "netting" breaks down, the skin caves in at that spot, and viola! you have a wrinkle.  As you age, your body makes less and less collagen and elastin, so protecting what you have is essential to keeping your skin youthful.

Pro-Xylane was actually developed by Lancome, and is the main ingredient in their Absolue Premium Bx which sells for...are you ready for this?  $125 a jar.  So the fact that Garnier has put this high end ingredient into a skin cream that sells for $16.99 was too intriguing for me to pass up!

The packaging is very eye catching in a bright red and black box.  The product itself comes in a jar, which is my only real complaint about it.  I would rather see skincare in a pump, because it lasts a lot longer and is much more sanitary, but at the end of the day, it’s not a deal breaker.  One great thing about this cream is, you really don’t need to use a lot- a little goes a long way.  It has a fairly thick, moisturizing consistency which my dry skin loves, and it leaves the skin perfectly prepped for makeup, thanks to its primer-like finish.  It also smells delicious...not perfumey like some skin creams.  It actually smells like sugar - very light and sweet.

But what you all are dying to find out is, does it work?  In a word, yes!  I've used it every day for the past four weeks, morning and night.  My 32 year old skin was just beginning to get those little forehead wrinkles, and I had previously attempted to hide them by cutting bangs.  Now, if I scrunch my forehead, the wrinkles disappear much faster, like they used to when I was in my 20's. My skin also looks plumper and younger overall.  Garnier says that I will notice more results in 8 weeks, so I can't wait until then. Ahh, technology... I think I'll start growing my bangs out now!

  1. I've been using this cream for a few weeks and I definitely notice a difference. I didn't know that Lancome was using the same ingredient in their cream- and it's so expensive...damn!

  2. Thank you so much for reviewing this! I have been debating whether to buy this or shell out the big bucks for the Lancome. I think you've made up my mind!

  3. At nearly 60, the wrinkle cream ads featuring beautiful women in their 20's and 30's; who don't have much in the way of wrinkles to correct; aren't at all convincing. But when Garnier emailed about their new Ultra Lift Pro Gravity Defying Creme, saying it could restore a chin line, I had to give it a try. At my age, the wrinkled neck and sagging chin line are what I hate most about my appearance. From the very first use of this cream there was a big difference in my neck and chin line. It has made me feel so much better about my appearance that I highlighted my hair and had hubby take photos of me with my horses. I've hated every photo of myself for several years, but these looked good, as did my new drivers license photo! I'm only using the cream on my neck and jawline, but can vouch that it works very well for that area.

  4. I just bought it at Wal-Mart and it only cost $13.79, which made me happy and I love Garnier for hair products. I agree about loving the texture and consistency. It did burn a little though, which concerns me. I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen. I'm going to keep using it and see the results. It didn't burn that much, so I'm hoping that subsides.

  6. I had to come back and say how wonderful it is. I was the one who said it burned a little the first time. Well, it never has burned again since then, so that's good. And my skin looks wonderful. I've never seen a difference before when I've used any other skin cream, but I do now. My skin looks younger and healthier and my skin texture has improved too. I've used their leave-in hair conditioner for a long time and I love it because I don't even have to brush my hair to get tangles out; I can just run my fingers through it. With other conditioners, I was always pulling hair out to get the tangles removed, but I haven't had hair in my brush in a long time. Nice to know my hair is being left on my head instead of on my brush. I love Garnier!

  7. Hello. I really wanted to try this product because of all the raves and great reviews. However, I'm not trying this product because of the soy protein ingredient. My mom and her sister both had breast cancer. My OB/GYN has kept me off all hormones because of this. He is now saying for me not to use products with soy protein in it. :( I wish I could.

  8. I have been using this product for about 2 weeks. I am not all that saggy but my face does look better around the jaw area - which is just starting to blur a little. I like the way it looks on my skin without makeup, yet its a great primer for foundation. I will continue to use this product. Especially at this price, with comparable products selling for hundreds.

  10. I know this is wierd but do you think this will work on a male. I am a salesman and need to look good in the field for first impressions.

  11. I think it would definitely work on a male just as well as a female. I just started it last night and it makes my face silky soft. I'm in my late 40s and my jaw area is beginning to sage. I thought about a mini face lift, but I am sacred to go under the knife. I hope this helps that area and improves my skin. I will write back in a few weeks to tell you the results. I feel excited to try this product because of all the great reviews!!

  12. This product will definitely work on a male- the only thing to remember is that this is a very moisturizing cream. A lot of men I know tend to have oilier skin types, so this may feel too heavy for you. Also, many men do not like a dewy look to the skin, they want a more matte finish. If that sounds like you, you may be better off using Neutrogena Clinical, which has a much lighter consistency and doesn't leave your skin looking dewy.

  13. Had to chime in since I'm really stingy with praise for anything which is topical. I LOVE this stuff - it's reasonably priced (Harris Teeter in VA had it for under $10 plus coupons distributed often). I just turned 45 but my skin's closer to a mid-30's and a big fan of Avene. This cream is lovely - great consistency, delicate smell, rich (totally primer-like) and seemed to revive the area around my eyes almost immediately. I was gobsmacked. Three weeks in - no irritation, skin feels terrific and has a nice dewey look. Took a pic close up and it looks tight at the top of my sheekbone. What's really amazing is that having pulled an all nighter for work, I dabbed some on in the morning and the (normal) signs of fatigue were gone completely - better than any covering it up. This tells me that it would be ideal as a go-to cream for anyone traveling or spending time in an airplane (dry air/elements). I don't know what I'll see in a few weeks but what I've seen starting with the first day is enough to keep me devoted to it. B'bye Avene - at three times the price. Worth a try, that's for sure. I now keep a jar at work and dab a bit under my eyes mid-day to feel refreshed rather than adding more concealer.

  14. Thanks so much for all the comments! I will be reviewing the new Garnier cream with Pro-Retinol that actually stimulates your skin to produce collagen. Should be amazing if it's anything like this cream! :)

  15. I am 39 and have a big problem with crepey skin in the neck area, something that I feel is really letting down my otherwise not-so-old-looking skin. I have these really unsightly vertical lines that show up every time I move my head - the beginning of turkey neck, I guess. I really thought I had tried everything, including some VERY expensive creams, but all they did was moisturize the skin, whereas what I really needed was a LIFT. I couldn't believe it when I saw how well this product worked! It has absolutely reversed my neck "degeneration" by more than the 5 years Garnier promises. I have yet to try it on the rest of my face as I have very sensitive skin and am always worried about trying new products, but I don't really need to at this point as the neck is/was by far my biggest problem. Amazing.

  16. Does anyone else have terrible breakouts from this product and other "lifting" creams? The olay lifting creams worked better than Garnier, but both brands cause breakouts.

  17. I agree- the Olay products caused breakouts on my skin- no matter which of their products I used, they all caused major pimples!

  18. I DO NOT write reviews. Period. I am writing a review, as you can see. This product works wonderfully. And I mean from the very first application. Great smell and consistency and the difference was immediately noticeable. It has only been three days and I am so impressed I feel like telling strangers in the street. I am 58 years old - lost 60 lbs. (and a husband) and had the saggiest jowl and chin area around the neck. THE FIRST DAY, my skin started drawing up and feeling and looking smoother. I am ready to stock up because I always worry that when I find something I love, it will disappear from the shelves. Wonderful product! Buy it!

  19. Thank you so much for your review! I agree this is a totally amazing product and proves that you don't need to spend a lot of money to get fantastic results!

  20. I am 54 years old and bought this product. I have had major breakouts since I used this. I'm not sure if it is hormonal or not but after reading the above posts, I think it is this cream. Maybe I will try using on my neck only. I have never had breakouts with other products.

  21. Well I am getting married next month and decided to try it on my chin and neck area. I will write back in four weeks to tell you if it works.

  22. Definitely! Can't wait to hear your results! I used this before my wedding last June, and my skin was looking great by my wedding day.
