I was born with baby fine hair, but when I was younger I had a lot of it...at least that's what my stylist at the salon always used to say when she cut my hair. But as I approach 40, it's been getting thinner, especially from the mid-shaft to the ends.
Adding volume isn't easy if I want to wear it straight- it usually falls flat within an hour or two. So instead, I've been opting to curl my hair most days. The first day it looks great, but after sleeping on it all night, it's back to flats-ville again! Since I don't like to wash my hair every day, my second-day hair usually ends up being a bun or a ponytail.
Recently, NuMe asked if I would like to review one of their Curling Wands (and also offer my readers an amazing deal this weekend only- see the end of the post for details). I had heard about them a lot on Instagram and YouTube and was curious so I ended up ordering the Classic Wand...it has a tourmaline-infused barrel which helps to protect your hair by using less direct heat, and is perfect for fine or damaged hair (like mine).
If you have thick or hard to curl hair, they also offer Magic Wands which are made from titanium which heats up very quickly and is super heat efficient. They offer an adjustable heat setting (the classic wands don't.
*Both types of wand use negative ion technology which calms frizz and helps to add shine.*
NuMe Classic Wand in Turquoise |
The Classic Wand came in a large cardboard tube which was awesome...don't you hate when curling irons come in those plastic packages that are almost impossible to break into?
It comes in three colors...black, pink, and turquoise. It's a very simple, easy to use design with just an on-off switch. The heat is not adjustable, as I mentioned above (it heats up to 410 degrees) and once you plug it in, it's ready in about a minute.
Also, the bottom of the handle swivels 360 degrees, so you never get tangled in the cord as you're moving it around to different areas of your head.
I went with the larger 32 mm size (about 1.25 inches) instead of the 25 mm (1 inch) because I wanted loose waves that mainly add volume rather than curls.
The available sizes are:
- 19mm will give ringlets or tight curls.
- 25mm is the most versatile...you can change the look by how much hair you wrap at a time (a thin section gives tighter curls while thicker sections give looser curls) and whether you let the curl cool and set or if you pull on the curl while it's still hot.
- 32mm is their bestseller, and gives loose waves
- Pearl wands (Classic only) will give an uneven curl - perfect for beachy waves
- Reverse wands (Classic only) - tighter curl on the top, looser at the bottom (or vice versa, depending on how you hold the wand).
The Classic Wand has a clipless design, which means you hold it vertically and wrap a section of hair around the barrel, holding it by the end for about 5-10 seconds (I do 5 since my hair is so fine), and then letting it go. I like to curl my hair away from my face for the most natural result, and I'm not too careful about grabbing sections that are all the same size...that way it doesn't look too perfect. The wand also comes with a heat-resistant glove so you don't burn your fingers...definitely a good thing to have!
Before and Afters
This is what my hair looks like when it's straight. It doesn't have a lot of volume and falls pretty flat around my face.
This is after using the 32 mm NuMe Classic Wand...it gives me big, bouncy waves that make it look like I have twice the hair! If I want actual curls, I'll use a 25mm wand, but I don't do that too often...this is my everyday go-to look. I'm actually growing my hair out, so I can't wait to use the NuMe iron to get these gorgeous waves on longer hair...it'll be so pretty!
Here's a look from the side...I curled pretty large sections of hair to get a loose wave, starting in the middle and going down to the ends (leaving out the last inch or so).
I was surprised at how long my curls lasted! I curled my hair in the morning and it looked exactly the same when I went to bed...I couldn't believe it!
But the true test was seeing if the waves still be there in the morning. I couldn't believe my eyes when I woke up and still had waves in my hair. Granted, my hair didn't have quite as much volume as the first day, but I was definitely able to get a second day out of it instead of resorting to putting it up in a ponytail.

Omg your hair looks gorgeous! I actually have the opposite problem, thick coarse frizy hair. I usually blow dry it straight but recently this girl at a kiosk in the mall asked if she could straighten my hair and the difference was like night and day! I never understood why someone with straight hair would use a straightener until that day. It made my pouffy hair sleek smooth and shiny! The problem? It was over $100 so needless to say I walked away. But your post comes at the right time because I've been researching cheaper options. I would love to get one of these on sale! Thank you so much and I love your blog.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! :) It's amazing what a straightener will do! I know when I use mine to get rid of frizz, it completely flattens out my hair. Then I have to curl it, haha! But my sister who has really thick hair uses a straightener to make her hair more sleek and swears by it.
DeleteI have always wondered how you did your hair and what products you use. Do you put styling products in it? I have similar hair to yours. It doesn't hold curl and is baby fine. I will have to try this!
ReplyDeleteI actually don't use a lot of product in my hair because anything I add tends to weigh it down. I like to use Living Proof's Restore Heat Protection spray because it's almost weightless and helps protect my already damaged hair from getting singed. I also like to use a tiny drop of L'oreal Extraordinary Oil serum after curling to give a little bit of shine and polish. I rub it between my hands and start from the middle of my hair down to the ends...whatever is left I run across the top. :)
DeleteYou're gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteAww thank you so much Melissa! :)
DeleteI discovred Nume one year ago and i bought their complete set and i have to say that is the best curler i ever tried. I love their curler and love how it make my hair look.

Thanks so much for your letting us know your experience with NuMe! I agree...I was so surprised by how long my curls lasted! :)
DeleteI agree and I love how your hair looks, very pretty, soft and natural. It looks great way to add volume without feeling like your hair is "curly". It looks like it has lots of bounce. I never thought about sizing up my curling iron (I use a 1 inch) but it makes total sense!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Liz! Definitely, sizing up helps a lot. It's sometimes hard to find sizes larger than 1" in the stores, although Ulta carries some larger sizes. Most of the time people with medium to short hair lengths are advised to use smaller barrel sizes, but I think that's only if you're looking for curl. I always use the larger sizes, even when my hair is short. For me, I think of it like using large velcro rollers for body and bounce...I'm just too impatient for those, so I use a large curling iron instead, haha!
DeleteI just saw a 25mm in Marshalls for $20! I'm not sure if I should get it since I already have a curling iron and I barely use it but your hair look sooo amazing!
ReplyDeleteHi everyone,
ReplyDeleteI saw the exact same iron at my local Marshalls and TJMaxx retailing for $20-25!!! I have coarse, thick, processed hair and I didn't have much luck with it. I ended up giving it away to my sister who has thin, but lots of hair (and hers isn't processed). She has better luck with it. I hope it helps.

My hair is short so I don't curl my hair, but I've heart these are great wands. I love the soft curls you did!
ReplyDeleteLove the curls! I don't own a curling wand, but I do really want one...
