Covergirl Tru-Naked Roses Palette Review

It seems like I was just saying last week that I was getting bored with drugstore makeup and had moved on to smaller indie brands, when Covergirl came along with their Spring 2016 collection and completely turned my head around!
When I first saw the Covergirl TruNaked palettes ($9.49) at Bed, Bath & Beyond, I thought to myself, "oh man, seriously...another UD Naked dupe?". It seems like just about every brand has been there and done that already, and with the exception of the Makeup Revolution Iconic Palettes, no one has come close in terms of eyeshadow quality or pigmentation.
But something caught my attention about these... a sticker on the front of the palette has the claim, "shades like a leading $50 eyeshadow palette". Ok, now none of the other drugstore Naked palette dupes has made that claim, so I bought one out of sheer curiosity. I figured that if the claims were true, I would go back and get the others. But I wasn't really prepared for what I was about to find out...
Covergirl TruNaked Roses Palette Review
The Covergirl TruNaked palettes have 8 shades, while the Urban Decay Naked palettes have 12. TruNaked Roses has rose-toned neutrals with a mix of shimmer and matte shades. It comes with a sponge-tipped applicator and no mirror, similar to the Maybelline Nudes ($9.99) and Revlon Not Just Nudes ($14.99) palettes.

I really like the mix of shades in this one! It has both shimmer and matte at the lighter end of the palette, plus some great matte transition and crease shades.

I wasn't expecting too much when I went to swatch these shades for the first time, but oh. my. gosh. Nothing could have prepared me for the soft, buttery-ness that is this palette. One swipe in the pan is all you need for smooth, saturated color. At first, I went back and forth in the pan with my finger a few times, thinking that I would have to do that to pick up more color. But all that did was create some fallout...these are so soft, you only need to glide your finger or a brush across them once and you'll pick up all you need.

These swatches below are done without any primer...they're just gorgeous. Even the matte shades swatch exceptionally well. To say that I'm impressed is an understatement! These can also be used wet for an even more intense color payoff!

So how does this compare to the Naked 3 palette? I figured I had to do a comparison since the claims say that the TruNaked palette stacks up to a $50 eyeshadow palette.

The shades are similar, but not exactly the same, which I'm actually happy about since I have the Naked 3 palette already. An exact dupe would be redundant in my collection, so I'm happy to have some slightly different shades to work with.

Here, I swatched each of the Covergirl shades next to a Naked 3 shade that looked to be similar. Most of them aren't exact dupes, but the important thing to notice here is that there's no real discernable difference in pigmentation!

If you follow me on Instagram, you've probably seen my swatch videos, but if not, I wanted to link  them here so you can see the kind of color payoff you can get with one swipe!

Here's a video I did where I show swatches of Urban Decay Blackheart vs. Cover Girl Mousse (the two darkest shades) and then Urban Decay Nooner vs. Cover Girl Copper Rose (both matte shades).

Overall, I am so impressed with the new Covergirl TruNaked Roses palette! The day I swatched it for the first time, I ran right back to Bed, Bath & Beyond and got the other two, so I'll be reviewing/swatching/comparing those soon!
I can't wait to try the rest of the Covergirl Spring 2016 line...I have a feeling these palettes are just the beginning.
Have you seen these in stores yet? Tried 'em? What do you think?

    1. Right?! It's very Naked 3-esque but still a little bit different, which I like! I'm glad it's not an exact copy. :)

    1. I felt the same way when I first saw them, but I figured OK I'm a beauty blogger, it's my job to try these things. But man, I was so surprised!

  4. Color me impressed! Cover Girl has obviously stepped up their game, because all the shadows I've had from them leave much to be desired. I'm excited to see your reviews of the others.

  8. When I saw your swatches, my jaws hit the keyboard and my eyes nearly popped out of my head! This is Cover Girl???? No way! I've long given up on DS shadows, and the DS dupes of UD Naked have been really pathetic, but this is a total game changer! And since I have oily lids, I always wear primer, so these swatches are going to look even better than they already do. For $10, I'm in. I can't wait for your review of that khaki olive gold palette (Katherine T.)

    1. Hi Katherine! That was my exact response when I swatched these for the first time...I had also given up and almost didn't buy this. I'm so glad I did!

  9. the shades aren't a dupe for UD but they are a good quality palette. The colors are pretty thanks for the swatches

    1. Sure, no problem! :) I'm actually kind of glad they're not an exact dupe. It's more of an "inspired by" palette.

    2. I agree! I'm glad it's not an exact dupe, as UD 3 had way too many light shades for me to pay $53 for it. Cover Girl has 4 fewer shades, but I like their color selection better, and it's $43 cheaper!! (Katherine T.)

    1. I'm hoping they are! I haven't swatched them yet because I need to take photos first (it's sooo hard not to dig into them). It's been very dark and rainy here the past two days, so taking pictures with good natural light is out of the question. Hopefully tomorrow! :)

  13. Do the eyshadows look as nice on the lids as they do in the swatches? I've had palettes that swatched wonderfully and didn't look as nice on my lids.

    1. Yes! They look so nice on my lids...the give great coverage with one swipe and lasted all day even without primer! They did crease a little bit after the 6-7 hour mark but I'm thinking that they won't if I wear primer next time. :)

  14. Are these limites edition?? I so want one. Id like to see a review on the other palettes u mentioned.

    1. They don't say limited edition anywhere on the packaging, so I'm hoping they're here to stay! :)

  15. I saw your IG video and got so excited for this! I want a rosey nude palette but don't wear e/s enough to buy $53 for one! I can't wait to see the others swatched!

  16. Yay I'm so glad covergirl really meant it when they said these compare to higher end shadows. After reading all the disappointing reviews on other drugstore palettes this is so exciting.

  17. Wow, those are the best CG shadows I've seen in a long, long time. I just might have to pick up this one.

  18. Please review the nudes ones! I've been looking for an affordable neutral palette, and the first palette I own is the Makeup Revolution Iconic 3, which I'm loving the darker colors. I still haven't figured out how to style the pink shades on me but I do need a neutral palette! These came off so amazing I'm having high hopes

  19. It's a weird day when the Naked 3 dupe is more rosy than the actual. The drugstore is sure stepping it up with their dupes
