Last week, I spotted the new Revlon Colorstay Not Just Nudes palettes at Walgreens ($14.99 each) and even though I'm not usually a fan of Revlon eyeshadows, I grabbed them both because I knew you guys would probably have questions about these and would be interested to know what they're like. These come in two shades...01 Passionate Nudes, which has warmer tans, browns, gold and bronze and 02 Romantic Nudes, which has cooler browns, pinks, purples and grays.
In general, drugstore eyeshadow palettes have been largely disappointing for me (although the L'oreal La Palette Nudes were the best of the bunch) so I tend to just bite the bullet and buy more expensive ones, and I also look to drugstore alternative brands like City Color, L.A. Girl and Profusion because they're even less expensive than the drugstore and the quality is top-notch.
But that doesn't stop me from wishing that the next drugstore palette will be great, because for the sake of convenience, it would be an amazing thing to just walk into Walgreens, CVS or Rite Aid and pick up a great eyeshadow palette. So keep on reading to see if these new palettes finally get it right!
First of all, the name Not Just Nudes sounded familiar to me and then I realized that Revlon has already had a palette called Not Just Nudes...it was this one:
I bought this cream shadow palette when it first came out back in...was it the 90's or maybe early 2000's? It seems like a very long time ago! It came in other shades too, but the only one I ever bought was the Not Just Nudes one.
Taking a closer look at each palette, lets start with 01 Passionate Nudes. This palette has a mix of matte and shimmer shades in warmer tones. I was pretty unimpressed with the pigmentation here. There was one standout shade that felt buttery and went on smoothly (with or without primer), and that was the bronze shade in the top row, 4th one from the left. The worst shade in the palette has to be the dark gray one directly underneath the bronze shade in the bottom row, 4th one from the left. It's a packed with glitter (although you can't really tell in the pan) and it just crumbles everywhere with tons of fallout and goes on much lighter than it looks. Plus, it easily wipes away from the skin.
The rest are just meh. As much as I didn't like the Maybelline Nudes palette, I felt that at least that one had a few shades that were buttery and pigmented while the rest were just ok.
I swatched these without primer first, and they just didn't have any intensity compared to what they look like in the palette. They were dry and powdery for the most part and didn't have much lasting power on my skin, wiping away pretty easily.
With primer, some of the darker shades came through a little bit better, but when layered over a base they became very hard to blend. The 02 Romantic Nudes palette is full of cooler toned shades that I was really drawn to, especially that cranberry shade in the top row (2nd from left) and the purplish gray one all the way to the right of the top row. This one actually had better pigmentation that the Passionate Nudes palette for some strange reason, especially once I had used it for a few days. It seemed like once I broke through the top layer of these shadows they applied a little better (but that didn't happen with the other one).
In the bottom row, the pink shade 2nd from the left and the purple shade on the right were glittery shades that had major fallout and left glitter dust everywhere, swatching very light compared to their appearance in the pans. The rest of these applied ok...still not fantastic but better than the warmer palette.
Looking at these swatches, there's definitely a difference between this one and the Passionate Nudes palette. Without primer, they swatched ok...not super pigmented but not terrible either. Over primer, these had a nice intensity for the most part, except for those two glittery shades I mentioned (in the swatch photos it's the purple one at the bottom and the pink one that's the 4th shade up from the bottom). But again, over primer, they became very difficult to blend.
So, do I think you should pay $14.99 for these? Nope! Maybe the Romantic Nudes one would be something to try if it was on sale, but I honestly think that I liked the Maybelline Nudes palettes better than these (and I wasn't a fan of those either).
If you're looking for affordable palettes with better pigmentation, I'd recommend trying some by City Color or the Beauty Bricks by L.A. Girl $9 (check out my reviews of them here and here.
Sorry I didn't have better news with these! I had my fingers crossed that maybe these were a new and improved formula or something but sadly, they just didn't pan out for me, especially at $14.99.
Have you tried these yet? What are your thoughts?
I've always hated Revlon eyeshadow. They have no pigment! These look a LOT like the Maybelline nude pallets. Looks like they just stuck 'Revlon' on the package and that was it.
ReplyDeleteThey definitely used a similar design. I wish someone would come up with something new...everyone just wants to make a Nude or Naked palette. Let's see something different!
DeleteOoh i look at your other reviews and I'm going to look for the City Color palette! It looks fantastic, and so much like the Naked one! I'm stoked. Though there must be something wrong with me, I happen to really like the Maybelline Blushed Nudes, but I know a lot of people don't lol. Oh well, I also don't too often use high end palettes either. Thanks for the great reviews!!
ReplyDeleteHaha no there's nothing wrong with you! :) In fact out of all the Maybelline palettes, the Blushed Nudes one is my favorite. For some reason, that one seemed to have better pigmentation than the others and I liked the shades.
DeleteThanks for sharing your thoughts on these palettes... honestly, I'm not surprised that the quality isn't fabulous... and I'm completely a drugstore makeup kind of girl! The shades don't appeal to me at all... the Maybelline ones definitely seem better, with shade range, as well as shadow texture. I haven't tried those palettes either, but I tend to like Maybelline eye shadows. I think for "drugstore prices", some of my favorites are by Sleek.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jessica! I keep meaning to check out Sleek and haven't had the chance yet. I'm going to look into them. :)
DeleteI always skip out on these drugstore palettes, they never look like they are worth the price!
ReplyDeleteA Little Dose of Makeup
So true! They're always priced pretty high for the drugstore and the quality just isn't there.
DeleteTheir eyeshadows have disappointed me in the past, so good to know this is worth the pass. $14.99 is pretty expensive for a drugstore palette!

I thought so too! I have palettes that are much less expensive from other brands like the ones I mentioned in my post and also Makeup Revolution has some great palettes too! I just don't understand why the drugstore brands can't get it right!
DeleteI've given up on the traditional drugstore shadows eons ago ( Cover Girl, Maybelline, Revlon). They are almost all bad, and don't stand a chance on my oily lids, even with primer. Sad to see them throw the same poor quality shadows into a palette and call it a day. They are missing out on a HUGE market. For me, I have to go with UD or MUFE or the cheaper indie brands like Colour Pop and City Color. (Katherine T.)
ReplyDeleteUgh I know! Can you imagine how much money they would make if they just came up with a great formula? People are taking the time to order from indie brands online just so that they can find a better formula for an affordable price, but if they were available to everyone right at the drugstore that would be huge!
DeleteThe cream palette that you mentioned, do you remember if you liked it? I don't think I've ever seen it in stores but I know it's on Ulta's website.
ReplyDeleteHi Erica, I don't remember liking it very much. It was very sheer and had a sort of greasy feel to it and it creased on my lids. At the time, there weren't any other cream shadows at the drugstore but now there's Maybelline Color Tattoo which I like a lot better! :)
DeleteThanks for the info. :)
DeleteI got the Blushed Nudes on sale, and it reminded me why I stopped using Revlon's eye shadows years ago lol. Actually, the bottom row wasn't bad, but the top row needed primer to be even OK. I'll be skipping the others in this line.
ReplyDeleteI had a feeling that this new Revlon will be another dud and you confirmed my suspicions. I tried Revlon eyeshadows in the past and they all ended up in my trash can after just a few uses. The pigmentation is beyond poor even when I use a primer.
ReplyDeleteI still have a brand new Not Just Nudes( cream) palette. Its not even open yet. I've been saving it because I love it so much.
ReplyDeleteI recently picked this romantic nudes palette up at target...I think it was only $8.99 so I couldn't resist! But alas, it was a dud. I knew it would be b/c I have been so disappointed with Revlon shadows in the past. They are just terrible. I feel their lip products are really good...but for drugstore e/s you can find so many better others like wet n wild and even some of the cover girl ones are superior...your review was totally on par with my own opinions
