Maybelline The Colossal Chaotic Lash Mascara ($5.89 at Bed, Bath & Beyond) is brand new in stores this month and is supposed to make your lashes into "a perfectly sexy mess". Hmm...let's take a look.
Ok, is it just me, or are the model's lashes in this ad completely unappealing? They're like, very Tammy Faye Bakker, right? I was always taught to comb through and separate my lashes to avoid the clumpy, spidery look so it's interesting that this is now a trend. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I'm not digging it.
According to the package instructions you're supposed to apply this the regular way first by holding the brush horizontally and sweeping it up through your lashes, and then turning it vertically and sweeping the brush side to side to "disorganize" your lashes. The tip of the brush is bent to make this process easier, but it's all a bit gimmicky to me because I feel like you can do this with any old mascara wand (I just choose not to!).The tube reminds me of the Lash Sensational tube except it's bright yellow instead of pink.
The brush is a typical mascara wand (not the rubbery kind, but the regular type) that has a very slight bend at the tip. This is what Maybelline is calling the "teaser brush".
Here are my before and afters...I actually tried messing up my lashes with the brush as instructed but all I got were clumps and I couldn't stand it. So I combed them through again using the wand horizontally and was able to get nice separation and some decent volume and length, but nothing to write home about.

Your review only confirmed my suspicions about this mascara. Tammy Faye Baker is also the first thing that came to my head when I first saw it. I can't understand why Maybelline would choose to create such product. Most of their other mascaras are good, except this one, of course.
ReplyDeleteIt's so true, I usually like their mascaras but I don't get this one. It may be trendy but I feel like this won't appeal to the majority of people.
DeleteDid Maybelline really think that this would catch on? How about focusing on making the best lengthening and volumizing and curling formula, that's all we girls really want!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! This is actually a good mascara but the marketing is just not appealing. I just use the brush the normal way because there's no way I'm going to mess up my lashes, haha!
DeleteI actually love the way your lashes look 'after'. Though I like Tammy Faye, i am not down to have those lashes. Lol. This should be at Dollar Tree soon enough.
ReplyDeleteHi Shauna, thanks! If you use it like a normal mascara, it works great and I like the results. But the marketing is just weird.:)
DeleteThe promo pic looks very, very scary, like someone killed a spider and glued it to her lashes (Katherine T.)
ReplyDeleteLOL Katherine, I just totally laughed out loud! I have a serious fear of spiders so seeing these pics actually gave me the creeps! They really do look like big spider legs!
