Pur Cosmetics 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Review

I was born with dry skin, so I've spent most of my makeup-wearing years avoiding powder face products for the most part. The few times I did try a powder foundation or setting powder, I ended up looking cakey with my dry patches front and center...yuck.

But today's powder foundations have come a long way and the past few years, and I've come to see the beauty in them, especially as I develop early signs of aging such as fine lines and noticeable pores on my cheeks.

I've always wanted to try the Pur Cosmetics 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup ($29.50-$34) and was so excited when they sent me their beautiful new 10th Anniversary edition in two shades to try. They also sent me the 10th Anniversary Chisel Brush ($25), which makes application easy and flawless.

Let's take a look!

Packaging:

The 10th Anniversary compact is absolutely gorgeous and covered in glitter and rhinestones. It was difficult to capture just how pretty it is in a photograph...the way it catches the light in person is stunning. It does cost $34 (while the original packaging is $29.50) but the extra $4.50 might be worth it if you love pretty packaging!

The bottom of the compact is clear plastic and there is a mirror inside. It doesn't come with a puff or any type of applicator so you'll need to use your own brush to apply this. I prefer using a flat-top brush (like the Chisel Brush they sent me) when I'm applying powder foundations. I find that it really buffs the powder into your skin and gives you a flawless finish.
Formula:

I fell in love with this formula right away! A lot of people might think that powder foundations will age the skin by making it look dry or cakey but if you choose the right one, the opposite is true. Unlike liquids that sink into the skin (and as a result can sometimes sink into lines and pores), the right powder can glide over your skin and give an airbrushed finish.

This one doesn't look cakey, even if I apply multiple layers, and it doesn't sit in fine lines or pores at all! It gives my skin a soft matte finish with sheer to medium coverage depending on how much I build it up.

Pur 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Powder contains pure mineral pigments and encapsulated mineral water from the Swiss Alps as well as Shea Butter to hydrate the skin. Botanicals such as Waltheria as well as Vitamin B3 brighten dark spots and discolorations, while anti-aging ingredients like ferulic acid, retinol and lactic acid keep the skin youthful. I have never had any breakouts or irritation whatsoever from using this over the past few weeks...in fact, my skin seems to be behaving better! I was able to get through the month without my typical hormonal chin breakout.

It's also gluten-free, BPA-free, paraben-free, vegan, and tested to be safe and non-irritating for your eyes.

I was given the shades Fair & Light to try. Fair is more yellow-toned (and I have pink-toned skin) so Light is the best match for me. The swatches below are very heavy swatches so that you can see the colors better...don't worry, it doesn't look that obvious when you apply a normal amount to your face, it actually seems to disappear on the skin!

Most days, I apply a primer, then concealer under my eyes and on any other more obvious spots or redness, then apply this all over my face, moving in circular motions with the Chisel Brush. This gives me a really natural flawless finish. If I want more coverage, I'll apply this over a tinted moisturizer or BB Cream. It helps to mattify the dewy finish that those types of products have while giving even more coverage.

The only downside for me is that it's not super long-lasting and I find that I need to touch up mid-day. Applying it over primer definitely helps it to last longer, but I sometimes notice it wearing off after 4-5 hours, especially around my nose. I don't know if it's because my drier skin doesn't hold onto products as well or if those with oily skin will have the same issue.

Overall though, I'm loving this foundation and based on the reviews I've seen, I'm not the only one (currently it has 4.5 out of 5 stars with over 3,500 reviews on Ulta.com!). It's so quick and easy to use....just buff it in and go! It feels so weightless, like you're wearing nothing on your skin. I also really appreciate how it gives my face a soft-focus appearance while also giving a nice amount of coverage!

  1. I'm in the same boat as you. I have dry flakey skin and it is awful. I swear, my skin just wants to be contrary to everything about how dry skin is supposed to work. Liquid formulas always seem to stir up and highlight dry spots for me. I decided to give this product a try back when it was on sale at Ulta during their 21 days of beauty in the spring and it has been virtually perfect. I also love that I can wear it either over a primer or by itself, and both ways it looks and feels nearly invisible. It's a great product. It's good to see it getting the credit it deserves, esp since you always hear that those of us with dry skin need to avoid powder product ^^

    1. I completely agree with everything you said...it sounds just like my skin! It's a wonderful product for those of us with dry skin who are supposed to "avoid" powders. Actually, it seems to be one of those rare products that works for everyone, since a lot of the positive reviews I read were also from people with oily skin! :)

  2. This is my holy grail powder foundation! Regular liquid foundations used to irritate my acne-prone skin and I was in a constant cycle of breakouts, even if they claimed to be non-comedogenic. For some reason they just seemed to clog things up. But a few weeks after using this my skin cleared up and I've only had a handful of breakouts since (which I think were hormonal related anyway). I will stay loyal to this for life, just wish it wasn't so expensive!
